The McCarthy Lodge in McCarthy, Alaska, is shown in this painting during the fall season along with the local old truck icon. Alaska artist Gail Niebrugge added the truck to the painting because she thinks it is an important part of the history of this remote town. She has no idea where the truck is today, and wishes someone would clean it up and put it back on main street. This painting was completed from research that the artist obtained while serving as the first Artist-in-Residence for the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. While residents and park rangers attended at a town meeting inside the lodge discussing road improvements, Niebrugge remained outside and found this great reflection in a water puddle. The mechanics of politics do not interest Niebrugge, she leaves that to others who are emotionally tougher and stronger, she believes she is better at finding the heart and soul of a place and presenting this to the world in a painting.  Quietly watching, waiting, observing, sketching, photographing, writing in her journal, this is Niebrugge’s life as an artist.
