Beginning Mystrom Boathouse Commission

It is always difficult to sort out the composition when beginning a painting with dots, it is much easier to lay down a thin, transparent wash to block in elements of the design.  But, for some reason I started this painting with dots knowing full well that when it came to painting the tiny figures I’d have to abandon this technique.  Go figure.  I’m an artist, not a builder.  The color scheme for this work is analogous, colors found side by side on the color wheel.  It is a comfortable summer palette of shades and hues of blues and greens.  The driving force behind this composition is strong light casting diagonal shadows.

A close-up view of the size of the small dots in relation to the size of the tiny figures.  It became very clear that dots would have to be abandoned at some stage of the painting.
