Mallard Ducklings Growing Fast

Seven Mallard chicks have been cruising the shore of our cove for three weeks, and are growing so fast it is hard to believe.  This area is rich with food and home to two sets of Mallards with chicks as well as Red Neck Grebe and Bonaparte Gull nests.  We love the ducklings and enjoy watching the baby Grebes ride around on their parents backs, but you can have the Bonaparte Gulls.  When their babies are born they become like Nazi suicide bombers diving at our heads and dropping poop as they screech from the sky at high speeds.  We wave a push broom or an oar overhead, or spray them with a strong stream of water as a defense when working in the yard alongside the lake.  Not fun.  But, always exciting.  Just another day at the lake.

  1. I love the seasons and activities at your lake.

We are enjoying the birdlife, parks and lake in our new area. We certainly don’t get such dramatic differences between the seasons as you do though.

  2. Dramatic is the word for it, we could use some sunshine this summer. It has rained almost every day and the weeds are taking over.
