The research for the painting “Above the Wrangells” was done during a flight in a small single engine airplane over the Wrangell Mountains to a remote bush settlement of Chisana, Alaska, in 1989. The artist Gail Niebrugge began the painting the following year 1990, and worked on it off and on for many months, never bringing it to completion. Other projects had priority, the partially finished painting was stored in a vertical file and soon forgotten among blank canvas and art boards. During her recent search for unfinished work, Niebrugge discovered this gem, placed it on the easel and finished it in less than a day. “Sometimes”, said the artist, “it helps to step away from a work for awhile and when viewing it again solutions to problems become obvious”. She continued, “but I don’t recommend stepping away for over two decades, that is ridiculous.” Nevertheless, for Alaska Artist Gail Niebrugge this worked out just fine.
