Patchwork Lawn

On June 9th we sowed lawn seed in the back yard by hand, unfortunately within two hours a terrible a wind storm wrecked havoc sending seed and topsoil airborne. Undaunted, we faithfully watered the survivors and now have a strange looking patchwork lawn.

When it came time to seed the front yard, we called a professional hydroseeder. The hydroseed will show green in a week if it is warm and sunny, two weeks if it is cold and cloudy. His advice for our back yard was to add seed to the brown patches and carefully fertilize with a diluted liquid spray. Last night I spread additional seed and today we fertilize. Now we water another 21 days for the second germination. I’ll be glad when the back yard is finally covered in thick, healthy grass.

This summer has been cold and cloudy and plants are slow to bloom and grow. The only benefit to cool temperatures is a diminished demand for watering. This is summer for Pete’s sake, where is the sun? Sun would certainly help our grumpy dispositions.

I see random patches of blue between clouds this morning, is this significant? Will we see sun today? I’ll know by the end of the day. Gotta go water again, the hydroseed is looking dry.
