Paper Birch Cross Stitch Won First Prize

A beautiful cross stitch design completed by Susan Schroeder adapted from my painting “Paper Birch” by Evelyn Harvison of North Pole, Alaska, won first place at the Alaska State Fair 2007! Congratulations Susan!
All week people came into my booth telling me to go see the fantastic cross stitch in the Irwin Building. I finally found time to check it out yesterday, the last day of the show. It is awesome! Later in the day Susan and Joe Schroeder stopped by the booth to share their excitement about the first place blue ribbon. Susan said that it took her over 18 months to complete the design.
In 1996 I was contacted by Evelyn Harvison for permission to use one or more of my paintings to create cross stitch patterns for use by people that she described as “dyed-in-the-wool cross stitch fanatics”. She explained that very few people are willing to tackle the complexity of her patterns. Subsequently she created patterns for “Open Water”, “Green Aurora” and finally “Paper Birch”. After she completed “Paper Birch” in 2000 she wrote that she had serious doubts during the desiging and stitching and that this, by far, was the most complex pattern she has ever completed. Recently I have been unable to locate Evelyn. If anyone knows her wherabouts, please let me know. I would like to share this success story with her.
In the meantime, kudos to Susan Schroeder!
